Satellites are well suited for broadband communications. In this paper we consider the special features of satellite systems, some of the broadband applications that are well-suited for satellites and some of the technologies which make possible broadband satellite communications, as well as the research programs that led to their development. We describe how such technologies, and other factors, have contributed to the evolution of broadband satellite systems, and discuss some of the challenges in establishing such systems. We finish by offering some concluding remarks on the role of satellites for broadband access.

Next Generation Mobile Systems will implement one's dream of anywhere, anytime communications. Providing global coverage and mobility, satellite systems will play an important role in order for this to be achieved. The design options of satellite systems include several choices. The basic ones are the choice of orbit, processing and switching, intersatellite links, and link layers technologies. In addition to the network architecture, the protocols must be developed for efficient use of the satellite radio resources. The most important protocol design issues concentrate on Medium Access Control (MAC) techniques, routing and traffic management. In this paper some of the special features of satellite systems are considered. Emphasis is given in MAC protocols design, as well as in research programmes that led to their development. Finally, an adaptive hybrid access scheme that combines CDMA technology and random access techniques is presented. This new scheme is called CDMA/PRMA and from the results obtained it is a very promising access technique for next generation satellite systems. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper two VSA T satellite network architectures are proposed to offer access to the B-ISDN and accommodate ATM service needs in an integrated manner, while achieving maximum bandwidth utilisation of the satellite. The first architecture uses a traditional 'bent pipe' repeater satellite. The need for optimization of the channel capacity allocation scheme is discussed, using a preliminary performance analysis for a Dynamic Reservation TDMA system which takes advantage of the flexibility and the statistical multiplexing capabilities of ATM and supports various VBR and CBR services. Some bottlenecks, introduced by the satellite link, in the performance of protocols such as TCPIIP are highlighted. The second architecture uses an OBP satellite with spot beams and cell-switching capabilities. A novel approach, in which statistical multiplexing is performed on-board the satellite, is suggested and results show that a much better satellite bandwidth utilization can be achieved. In this architecture, smaller earth terminals can be used without complex dynamic reservation protocols, but at the cost of a more complex satellite payload.
