Borrowing is one of the most common sources of new words in languages and loanwords are one of the types of borrowings across language boundaries. The English language has adopted many words from other languages throughout history. In this process, loanwords sometimes undergo certain variations. The present study is about phonemic variation of Urdu loanwords in standard British English. A list of 135 Urdu words of daily use that English has borrowed was compiled purposively from Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary, 10th ed. (2020) for analysis. All words in the list were transcribed into IPA. Urdu pronunciation was checked from ("Urdu Lughat," 2017) and Farhang-e-Talaffuz (2017) whereas English pronunciation was checked from Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary 10th ed. (2020) and a comparison was made to highlight phonemic variation. Analysis of data indicates that almost one third loanwords retain their pronunciation and among the rest, the majority of words undergo change of vowel sounds whereas others either change a consonant sound or vowel and consonant both in some cases.

This paper examines graphemic and lexical borrowings in Twi for Academic Purposes (TAP). Textbooks written in Asante Twi by some renowned scholars in the language constituted the dataset for this study. The textbooks were read and all instances of anglicisms or English features borrowed into Twi were collected. The borrowed-features were identified by drawing on our native speaker and scholarly competencies. The dataset was analyzed by drawing on Clyne’s (1977) Borrowing Typology and Haugen’s (1950) Borrowability Scale. Three key findings emerged from the analysis. First, the study yielded that in TAP two letters (<v>, and <j>) are borrowed towards empowering Asante Twi to enable it to account for words that contain these letters. Second, at the lexical level, it was found that the borrowed words were either integrated or adapted into Asante Twi linguistic environment. The final point was that all the lexical items realized were nominals affirming the primacy of noun on borrowability scales. The findings have implications for developing Ghanaian languages for academic purposes.

English lexicon has borrowed from 84 languages with French as the most important donor (Bielenia-Grajewska, 2009). English borrowed a great number of lexicon from French in Norman Conquest period. French which had status as high language in a diglosia situation influenced English in superstate borrowing. The main reason for borrowing is to provide words from the source language variety when there is no suitable existing words in the target language (Rao, 2018). This paper aims at describing the phonological process in the English loanwords from French. The data were collected from two online dictionaries; Larousse Francais-Anglais Dictionary and Oxford Living Dictionary. The data are English loanwords from French enlisted under categories A and B in the dictionaries. The method used to analyze the data was distributional method. The results show that Assimilation occurs in 29 loanwords or 6.6% of the total process which makes Assimilation process the least in number of the total process. Neutralization covers 7.8% with 34 loanwords. Syllable Structure is undergone by 63 loanwords or 14.3% of the total process. Strengthening occurs in 117 loanwords or 26.7% of the total process. Weakening covers 43.6% of the total process with 191 loanwords. Therefore, Weakening is the phonological process most found in the study.
