Lingual cortical defect of the mandible: an unusual presentation and tomographic diagnosis.

Abstract: A well-defined, bilocular radiolucency was found in the angle of the lower left mandibular ramus. The patient was asymptomatic. Serial cross-sectional tomography of the lesion revealed a lingual concavity in the mandibular cortical bone. A diagnosis of atypical Stafne's bone cavity was made.

“…In this study, most of the SBCs are located in the posterior lingual region of the mandible, but SBCs that are located in the buccal region, anterior region, ramus mandible are displayed as rare entities. Some variations of SBC such as bilateral lesions (3,15), lesions above the inferior alveolar canal (5, 16), bilobate as two cases (case 13 and 14) in the present study (5,17), trilobate (3), and lesions without sclerotic margins (5, 18) have also been described.…”

“…Therefore, in some cases more confirmatory diagnostic tools are mandatory [2–5, 12, 18]. Sialography is able to depict salivary tissue in the bony cavity and has been used to confirm the diagnosis [19].…”

“…On rare occasions, the depression may occur bilaterally 1,49 or as two adjacent, ipsilateral depressions. 38,62,69 In an attempt to clearly delineate a LP-variant radiographically, Drinnan 7 ®lled the concavity with a radiographic contrast medium. Oikarinen and coworkers, 42,46 using stereosialography, demonstrated contrast medium in a lobe of the submandibular salivary gland, part of which was situated inside a posterior mandibular bone depression.…”
