Lineshape of rotational spectrum of CO in He4 droplets

Abstract: In a recent experiment the rovibrational spectrum of CO isotopomers in superfluid helium-4 droplets was measured, and a Lorentzian lineshape with a large line width of 0.024 K ͑half width at half maximum͒ was observed ͓von Haeften et al., Phys. Rev. B 73, 054502 ͑2006͔͒. In the accompanying theoretical analysis it was concluded that the broadening mechanism may be homogeneous and due to coupling to collective droplet excitations ͑phonons͒. Here we generalize the lineshape analysis to account for the statistica… Show more

“…Previous experiments on microwave spectroscopy of molecules in helium droplets have shown a broadening of the molecular rotational lines, which amounts to ∼ 100 MHz in the case of OCS [2]. The line shapes are attributed to inhomogeneous broadening, and at least for CO in helium this was confirmed by calculations [50]. In order to account for this effect, we introduce a Gaussian broadening of B eff values with a standard deviation γ = 0.05 B eff , which corresponds to half width at half maximum of 66 MHz for I 2 .…”

“…[33] This interpretation is supported by theoretical work using path integral methods. [32,75,76] Experiments on charged atoms or molecules solvated in helium are, so far, limited to mass spectra; they cannot provide a similar level of detail. Is the observation of steps in the ion yield inconsistent with superfluidity in the first solvation shell?…”

“…It is important to note that the angulon quasiparticle theory described below is substantially simpler -and therefore more transparent -than numerical calculations based on Monte-Carlo algorithms [52,[54][55][56][57][58][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79].…”
