Linear Frequency Modulated Reverberation Suppression Using Non-Negative Matrix Factorization Methods, Dechirping Transformation and Modulo Operation

Abstract: In this study, we propose a reverberation suppression algorithm for linear frequencymodulated (LFM) pulse sonar systems using a non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) method. Because conventional NMF-based reverberation suppression algorithms are only applicable to continuous wave reverberation, we propose two pre-processing methods, namely dechirping transformation and modulo operation, to facilitate application of the NMF method to LFM reverberation. Moreover, we impose additional sparse constraints on the … Show more

Although the conventional NMF-based reverberation suppression method has been well used [12,13], room for performance improvement exists. The conventional NMFbased reverberation suppression method's limitations can be explained as follows.…”

“…To accomplish this goal, the received signal's spectrogram is analyzed using NMF, and the components of the target echo and reverberation are decomposed. Note that we focus on CW reverberation suppression because it is easy to extend the NMF-based CW reverberation suppression method to the LFM reverberation case using the pre-processing method proposed by Kim et al [13].…”

“…Lee [1] proposed an algorithm for the reverberation suppression of continuous wave signals using nonnegative matrix factorization. As NMF-based reverberation suppression algorithms are only applicable to continuous wave reverberation, Kim [12] proposed two preprocessing methods, namely dechirping transformation and modulo operation, to facilitate application of the NMF method to LFM reverberation. Array processing as an effective method to improve the signal-to-noise ratio is also used for reverberation suppression.…”
