Line code conversion for high speed optical transmission systems—some comparisons

Abstract: High speed code converters for mBnB and bit insertion codes are compared in terms of their hardware complexity. To overcome some of the problems of fast mBnB code conversion a new design is described using 5B6B as an example. Designs use a clocked multiplexing module. Results highlight the trade-off between coding efficiency, transmission performance and hardware complexity.
