LINDENS: A program for lineament length and density analysis

Abstract: Analysis of lineaments from satellite images normally includes the determination of their orientation and density. The spatial variation in the orientation and/or number of lineaments must be obtained by means of a network of cells, the lineaments included in each cell being analysed separately. The program presented in this work, LINDENS, allows the density of lineaments (number of lineaments per km 2 and length of lineaments per km 2 ) to be estimated. It also provides a tool for classifying the lineaments c… Show more

“…In this paper we consider that lineaments are straight linear features, presumably expressing a subsurface phenomenon, that differ distinctly from the patterns of adjacent features (Sabins, 1987). These lineaments show a NE-SW dominant trend in the Duero and Tagus basins (Giner, 1996;Cortés et al, 1998;Casas et al, 2000a;Cortés et al, 2003) and WNW-ESE in the Ebro basin (Arlegui and Simón, 2001;Arlegui and Soriano, 2003), coinciding with the trend of the main rivers or their main tributaries (Fig. 12).…”

“…[38] Lineament analysis aims to reveal the regional fracture pattern of an area [McElfresh et al, 2002;Casas et al, 2000;Koike et al, 1998]. O' Leary et al [1976Leary et al [ , p. 1467] defined a lineament geomorphologically as a ''mappable, simple or composite linear surface feature, whose parts are aligned in a rectilinear or slightly curvilinear relationship and which differs distinctly from the patterns of adjacent features and presumably reflects a subsurface phenomenon.''…”

“…Several techniques have been developed to map lineaments using automated algorithms (see Casas et al 2000;Ekneligoda & Henkel 2010;Elmahdy et al 2012;Elmahdy & Mohamed 2016b). However, the lineaments were drawn manually, taking into account previous works that were carried out in the same area (Herrero-Hernández et al 2010and HerreroHernández & Gómez-Fernández 2012).…”
