Limits on light WIMPs with a 1 kg-scale germanium detector at 160 eVee physics threshold at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

Abstract: We report results of a search for light weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter from the CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL). Constraints on WIMP-nucleon spin-independent (SI) and spin-dependent (SD) couplings are derived with a physics threshold of 160 eVee, from an exposure of 737.1 kg-days. The SI and SD limits extend the lower reach of light WIMPs to 2 GeV and improve over our earlier bounds at WIMP mass less than 6 GeV. PACS numbers: 95.35.+d, 29.40.-n * Par… Show more

“…If the neutralinos annihilate into τ + τ − , the IceCube experiment sets the strongest such indirect limit [132], and we also show the constraint from Super-Kamiokande [160]. These constraints are currently not sensitive enough to cut into the range of the 7 We also show, for completeness, the CRESST-II [162], CDMSlite [163] and CDEX [164] constraints on σ SI p , which do not impact range of mχ0 1 found in our analysis.…”

“…Looking specifically for low mass Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) requires the use a e-mail: scebrian@unizar.es of light elements as target, detectors with very low energy threshold, well below 1 keV ee 1 , and very low radioactive background. Results from either new implementations of semiconductor detectors with extremely low readout capacitance [2,3,4] or re-oriented experiments focused on low threshold [5,6,7,8,9,10] have already been presented. Gas Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) equipped with Micromegas planes have excellent features to fulfill these requirements.…”

“…The NaI(Tl) events are detected without delay, while there is a timelag within the germanium detector as the charge drifts, this timedifference then allowed (anti-) coincidence events to be selected. Indeed, the anticoincidence of the AC effectively removed all of the γ-ray induced backgrounds [108]. Using an active target mass of 0.919 kg with a greater exposure of 53.9 [kg d] and a reduction of background rates to 4.09 (4.22) counts [kg keV day] −1 at 0.475 -0.575 (1.975 -2.075) keV ee this run [107] was sufficient to rule out DAMA masses at 6 and 20 GeV/c 2 .…”
