Limited Approaches to Calcaneal Fractures

Abstract: Numerous randomized control trials, cohort studies, and meta-analyses have been done in the last 3 years comparing surgical treatment of calcaneus fractures. These studies indicate minimally invasive procedures decrease wound complication rates and achieve similar radiographic and clinical outcomes to open reduction internal fixation. In comparing different surgical treatment methods to non-operative treatment, operative management has increased complication rates but may lead to better functional outcomes in … Show more

“…15,16 To avoid these complications, limited approaches to calcaneal fractures as minimally invasive procedures have recently become more popular, but were not applicable here due to the nature of the injury and fracture. 17 By using the entry and exit wounds for the arthroscope and instruments and then reversing them, a through debridement and washout of the cavity could be achieved and the subsequent microbiological sampling of the cavity allowed confirmation of the absence of deep infection prior to bone grafting the cavity which facilitated an excellent bone reconstruction outcome with no infection.…”
