Limitations of magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound-directed (duplex) scanning in the diagnosis of subclavian vein thrombosis

Abstract: Data pertaining to abdominal aortic aneurysm among first-degree relatives of 91 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm are presented. The percentage of families with at least one affected first-degree relative of the proband (multiplex families) was 15.4%. In 21.4% of multiplex families parent-offspring transmission of abdominal aortic aneurysm was noted; in the remaining families only siblings were affected. The mean age at onset among probands was 67.3 years; that among all affected was 67.4 years. No stati… Show more

“…216,219,[223][224][225][226][227] Only two studies (total of 65 patients) have evaluated the accuracy of a single CUS compared with venography. 216,219 Although the pooled sensitivity and specifi city were 97% (95% CI, 90%-100%) and 94% (95% CI, 80%-99%), respectively, the studies were of low quality and the CIs are wide.…”

“…Overlying bony skeleton, obesity and difficulty of differentiation of large collaterals from the subclavian vein were noted as diagnostic difficulties in Doppler US studies. For this reason, duplex scanning of the subclavian vein has been noted to have low sensitivity and specificity (30).…”

“…2 False-negative studies do occur, however, because of acoustic shadows from the clavicle, which limits complete visualization of the subclavian vein. 10 Magnetic resonance imaging of the vessels and soft tissue is a very reliable noninvasive method for detecting thrombus and defining the regional anatomy. In the presence of thrombosis, magnetic resonance angiography has good correlation with contrast venogram when the latter is contraindicated.…”
