Limitation of Agricultural Groundwater Uses in Beauce (France): What Are the Impacts on Farms and on the Food‐processing Sector?

Abstract: Many farmers, and the large set of downstream operators who depend on their farm products, have become dependent on groundwater resources, which are declining in many parts of the world. Farmers have to reduce water consumption by growing crops with lower water requirements, or apply optimal irrigation strategies. The strategies they choose can have major consequences for downstream operators and agro‐industries. This paper presents an analysis of the impacts on, and consequences of, high water restrictions fo… Show more

“…Some early experience obtained in developed countries revealed that actors of food processing sectors are interested in creating standards and certification towards more sustainable practices (Vos and Boelens 2014) or in participating in negotiations concerning volumetric management of groundwater (Lejars et al 2012). Of course, such processes involve negotiations, transparency or at least information sharing.…”

“…Recent studies have shown that individual access to groundwater has structured food supply chains, especially product marketing and the supply of inputs and agricultural equipment, including irrigation equipment (Llamas 2010;Bouarfa et al 2011;Lejars et al 2012). The supply chain actors have become increasingly dependent on groundwater for irrigation, particularly as it secures not only the quality and quantity of production but also their business (Lejars et al 2012).…”

“…Such actions may eventually lead to the exclusion of farmers who lack the necessary capital to access the resource, and led to a local social crisis [40]. The implementation of multi-stakeholder consultation frameworks involving farmers is therefore urgently needed to initiate effective aquifer management [41,42].…”
