Limitation in the detection of Listeria monocytogenes in food in the presence of competing Listeria innocua

Abstract: After the enrichment, the PCR detection is more convenient than the standard one as PCR detection is not compromised by other present microflora.

“…This discrepancy may be due to L. innocua, and possibly other Listeria spp., outcompeting L. monocytogenes during the selective enrichment process (33)(34)(35)(36). Oravcová et al (37) reported that culture-based detection of L. monocytogenes in the presence of L. innocua was consistently lower than when the same samples were analyzed by PCR, indicating that the TaqMan assay results in our study may more accurately reflect the prevalence of the pathogen. Also, the use of Palcam and RAPID'L.…”

“…However, a note of caution has to be added since it is unknown whether any Listeria species may grow better than other species in the same sample during enrichment of sediment or plant samples. It has been reported that, during selective enrichment of food samples, growth of L. innocua is preferred over L. monocytogenes [59,60]. Species determination of water isolates from Postweiher was not performed.…”

“…Second, and more important, the sampling method applied involves an enrichment step. As long as, owing to its low abundance, Listeria clones cannot be detected directly in environmental samples, all conclusions drawn from such data, which refer to population structure, critically depend on the unknown potential of different Listeria clones to survive and compete in a selective enrichment procedure [59,60,75,76]. …”

“…또한 축산식품의 대량 생산과 냉장 및 냉동 기술의 발달로 인 하여 냉장식품이 장기간 유통되고 소비량도 증가하고 있 다. 특히 L. monocytogenes는 다른 병원성 식중독균과 달 리 저온에서도 성장이 가능하여 냉장유통 식품에서도 식 중독이 발생할 수 있으므로 이에 대한 관리가 필요하다 11,12) . (Fig.…”
