Lignans and Other Constituents ofCentaurea sphaerocephalassp.polyacantha

Abstract: Extraction of the aerial parts of CENTAUREA SPHAEROCEPHALA L. ssp. POLYACANTHA (Willd.) Dostal furnished the lignans (-)-matairesinol, (-)-arctigenin, and (-)-arctiin, two sesquilignans lappaol A and a stereo- or structural isomer of lappaol A, and a new dithienylacetylene.

“…C. sphaerocephala, locally named 'fiordaliso delle spiagge', is a perennial grassy plant with scattered leaves, 50 cm tall, that blooms from June to September. In previous investigations C. sphaerocephala has been shown to contain various polyacetylenic compounds, 13 lignans 14 and sesquiterpene lactones, 9 while for C. calcitrapa sesquiterpene lactones and lignans were described. [15][16][17] Volatile components obtained from acetone extracts of flowers, leaves, stems and flowerhead buds of C. calcitrapa have also been described previously.…”

“…given the interest of Centaurea pharmacology and phytochemistry and within the context of the study of Centaurea species growing in Algeria Zater et al , Kolli et al 2012, Bicha et al 2011, Bentamene et al 2010, Medjroubi et al 2005, we have taken interest in to study Centaurea sphaerocephala l. Previous studies on this species and/or its subspecies led to the isolation of flavonoid aglycones (Bentamene et al 2008), flavonoid glucosides (Bentamene et al 2010), sesquiterpene lactones (Bruno et al 1994(Bruno et al , geppert et al 1983), lignans, sesquilignans and a dithienylacetylene (Bastos et al 1990). The composition of the essential oil of this species was also reported (Senatore et al 2006).…”
