Light‐Switchable Single‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes Based on Host–Guest Chemistry

Abstract: A new type of light-switchable "smart" single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNTs) is developed by the reversible host-guest interaction between azobenzene-terminal PEO (AzoPEO) and pyrene-labeled host attached on the sidewalls of nanotubes via ππ stacking. The SWNTs hybrids not only are well dispersed in pure water, but also exhibit switchable dispersion/aggregation states upon the alternate irradiation of UV and visible light. Moreover, the SWNTs hybrids dispersion is preliminarily used as coating fl uid to form t… Show more

“…Importantly, nanomaterials can be designed as nanoscale drug carriers to avoid immune clearance by lymphocyte-macrophage system, and therefore allow drugs to efficiently target cancer cells. Over the past decades, inorganic nanoparticles have been explored as drug carriers for new anti-cancer treatments, as nanoparticles can be synthesized to have regular shapes, size, surface chemical and physical properties for better targeting of cancer cells 3 4 . However, inorganic nanoparticles can hardly be degraded in vivo , leading to maintenances in the body for a long time.…”

“…In another approach, a polyfluoroalkyl substituted SiPc derivative (SiPc-F) was synthetized and used to assemble a switchable hybrid system with single walled carbon nanotubes [186]. The supramolecular assembly was built up exploiting, first, host-guest interactions among SiPc-F and pyrene decorated β-CD (p-β-CD), synthetized according to the literature [192] and supposed to bear two pyrene moieties each CD. Such an interaction was confirmed by the red shift of SiPc-F Q band from 683 nm to 730 nm.…”

“…The bio applications of hybrid materials composed by carbon based structures and azobenzenes have been less explored if compared with spiropyrans. Guo and collaborators have proposed an innovative light-switchable SWCNTs hybrid device with potential applications as biomedicine sensor (Guo et al, 2013 ). They have prepared an hybrid system using the reversible interaction between a polymer containing an azobenzene moiety and a cyclodextrin (CD) containing SWCNTs through host-guest interaction between the AB and the CD.…”
