Light scattering properties of marine particles in coastal and open ocean waters asrelated to the particle mass concentration

Abstract: Variations in the spectral scattering coefficient of marine particles [b p ()] were measured at 241 locations in oceanic (case 1) and coastal (case 2) waters around Europe. The scattering coefficient at 555 nm normalized to the dry mass of particles [b (555)] was, on average, 1.0 and 0.5 m 2 g Ϫ1 in case 1 and case 2 waters, respectively. characterized by a high density that counterbalances the effect of a higher refractive index.
