Light propagation through optical media using metric contact geometry

Abstract: In this work, we show that the orthogonality between rays and fronts of light propagation in a medium is expressed in terms of a suitable metric contact structure of the optical medium without boundaries. Moreover, we show that considering interfaces (modeled as boundaries), orthogonality is no longer fulfilled, leading to optical aberrations and, in some cases, total internal reflection. We present some illustrative examples of this latter point.

“…From a macroscopic point of view, the response of a given material to an external electromagnetic stimulus is prescribed through the constitutive relations, expressing the induced fields and currents in terms of the externally applied electromagnetic field. The simplest manner of describing a material medium is by considering the regime where its response is linear and it is within that context where such linear constitutive relations are tantamount to the choice of a space-time metric tensor [11][12][13][14].…”
