Light pipe prototype testing

Abstract: The article reviews the potential of light pipe system as a daylighting approach in buildings and presents results of experiments on performance of tubular light pipe prototype. The main task is focused on an examination of the system light efficiency on the basis of long-term illuminance measurements. The data from the measurement give overview about the potential of the light guiding system for direct solar radiation. For temperate climate with dominant cloudy sky conditions the light guide shouuld be comple… Show more

“…Thus, the collection of daylight data is crucial to be considered in designing buildings using daylight [1,12]. The quality and quantity of external illuminance in a particular location is always considered primarily in many previous studies [12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. The location for external illuminance data collection for this study is at Campus Pauh Putra, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (latitude, 6.458575° and longitude, 100.346311°) to validate the capacity and pattern for northern region of Malaysia's climate.…”

“…The main aim of this paper is to focus on designing an optimum light pipe based on the efficiency of geometry and its' aspect ratio. The design of light pipe structure plays an important role in daylighting system as the reflected light that emitted from the light pipe to the diffuser can transform a dark space into space that is bright and full of natural light [14][15][16]. The recommended light intensity for offices, classes, libraries, show rooms and laboratories is 200 ~ 500 lux [12,13,17].…”

“…The reflectivity of the light pipe is typically between 85 and 94%, and it is composed of a highly reflective material such as aluminum or silver. The light pipe daylighting system consists of a light collector, a light pipe, and a luminaire to capture sunlight from the top roof and transport it to the entire building, as shown in Figure 1a,b [41,42,80,81]. To avoid glare and overheating, the amount of light entering the room is carefully adjusted.…”

“…The design of light pipes has a great influence on the indoor lighting effect. In addition to the internal materials, the light incident angle, the length of the light pipe and the turning angle and direction will all affect the performance of the light pipe [7], [8]. In this paper, the length of the light pipe and the incident direction of light are quantitatively analyzed, and the Monte Carlo ray-tracing method is used for simulation.…”
