Light organ anomalies in three species of myctophid fishes (Actinopterygii: Myctophiformes: Myctophidae) from the Pacific coast of Mexico

Despite numerous anomalies that have been reported for many species of fi shes, records on deep-water species are scarce and apparently very rare for luminescent organs (i.e., photophores). In presently reported study, we described and illustrated anomalies in the number and placement of primary light organs in three lanternfi sh species: the Mexican lampfi sh, Triphoturus mexicanus (Gilbert, 1890); the highseas lampfi sh, Triphoturus nigrescens (Brauer, 1904); and the popeye lampfi sh, Bolinichthys longipes (Brauer, 1906), collected off the Pacifi c coast of Mexico.
