Light-like big bang singularities in string and matrix theories

Abstract: Important open questions in cosmology require a better understanding of the Big Bang singularity. In string and matrix theories, light-like analogues of cosmological singularities (singular plane wave backgrounds) turn out to be particularly tractable. We give a status report on the current understanding of such light-like Big Bang models, presenting both solved and open problems.

“…This is not necessarily a bad thing. In the original heterotic string frame, the effective space-time Newton constant, 54) JHEP08 (2014)066 is still finite or decreasing at large |y|. Gravity is therefore a good description at large |y|, although heterotic string perturbation theory is not useful.…”

“…Later examples are of the matrix big bang flavor [49][50][51][52][53][54] for which the space-time cosmology involves null-time-dependence, but the matrix model involves a field theory with time-dependent parameters. Field theories with spacetime-dependent parameters exhibit interesting phenomena not seen in their Lorentz invariant counterparts; see, for example [55][56][57][58].…”

“…There is a rich history of string theory explorations of such singularities [1,2]. We have focused on describing certain timedependent deformations of AdS/CFT [3,4,5,6], where the bulk gravity theory develops a cosmological singularity, and breaks down while the holographic dual field theory, a sensible Hamiltonian quantum system typically subjected to a time-dependent gauge coupling, can potentially be addressed in the vicinity of the singularity.…”
