Light‐Induced Adaptive Responses under Greenhouse and Controlled Conditions in the Fern Pteris cretica var. ouvrardii

Abstract: AbstraetThe influence of different growth irradiance conditions on plant development and foliar features were assessed in a shade-adapted fern variety, Pteris cretica var. ouvrardii. A comparison of frond morphology, anatomy, chloroplast infrastructure and chlorophyll conlcnl of plants cultivated in both greenhouse and in controlled growth chambers under moderate light, low light (control) and extreme shade revealed pronounced phenotypic modifications. Moderate light induced decreased frond surfaces, thicker l… Show more

“…5). A similar stability of the chlorophyll alb ratio was also found in Pteris cretica L. (Hariri and Brangeon 1977) and in Betula penduta Roth. (Oquist et al 1982); but contrary to P. major ssp major a stable rate of photosynthesis occurred in these plants.…”

“…A higher chlorophyll content is a common response to shading (Boardman 1977, Wild 1979. Over a large light energy range (4-250 W m"^) the chlorophyll content of Pteris cretka L. decreased with increasing irradiance (Hariri and Brangeon 1977). Blias and Masarovicova (1980) compared species of sonny and shaded habitats: the species of shaded habitats had a higher chlorophyll content.…”

“…The growth conditions for Pteris cretica plants are described in the first paper (Hariri and Brangeon 1977). Five conditions were realized; two in controlled growth chambers (irradiance; 16 and 62 W m~'^) and three in the greenhouse (fluctuating light: 4-8 W m-^ 20-32 W m^^ = control and 20-250 W m"'^).…”

“…The Pn of leaves from fruiting and non-bearing trees are similar to that reported by Hansen (1970), Chalmers et al (1975), Fujii and Kennedy (1985), De Jong (1986), and Wood (1988. However, other researchers using other plant species have questioned the effects of carbohydrate accumulation in leaves on the photosynthetic rate (Ballantine and Forde, 1970;Wilkinson and Beard, 1975;Geiger, 1976;Hariri and Brangeon, 1977;Carmi and Shomer, 1979;Melis and Harrey, 1981;Lichtenthaler et al, 1982). Daie (1985) In the present study, the total growth of the new roots at the stage of fruit harvest was larger in defruited trees.…”
