Light duty automotive duplex drum brake squeal analysis using the finite element method

Abstract: The brake system creation is an important achievement for automotive production. However there is a secondary response of this system, its noise emission. Brake noise researches started in 1920’s and since then several causes were identified. In addition, many kinds of noises, their frequency range and characteristics were detected. Between these, the squeal is the noise that most concerns the automotive industry by reason of high warranty costs and environmental impact. The squeal noise occurs as a result of … Show more

“…7,9,10,37,36 Despite these results suggest that low and constant μ are desirable, these fullfilments are not enough to reduce squeal occurrence, because this issue can occur even in these conditions owing to modal coupling. 4,3,6,5,36 These can be seen in Figures 9(b), 10(b), 11(b), 9c, 10c, and 11c that illustrate how μ intensifies the maximum eigenvalue and number of unstable points. These means that the magnitude of vibration mode is improved and also its amount.…”

“…Despite this fact, the results presented in Table 2 are consistent with literature and present values common to special alloy with gray cast iron for high vibration absortion and brake force performance. 14,5,37,9,16,12,18,39,36…”

“…The same happens for the back plate, it main change are the MUV surface graph response being way more sensible to back plate thickness variation. These happens owing to the fact that as the temperature increases, the thermal expansion of the brake components lead to changes in the shape and position of the brake pads and rotors,10,17 which alter the contact conditions between the components and promote the occurrence of brake squeal [43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51].…”
