Light Chain Types of Transiently Occurring Cold Haemagglutinins

Abstract: In the chronic cold haemagglutinin syndrome, the isolated cold haemagglutinins are usually electrophoretically homogeneous and appear to be ‘monoclonal’ γM‐globulins. Only α chains have been found in gel diffusion tests on 87 isolated ‘monoclonal’ cold haemagglutinins. Cold haemagglutinins developing during pneumonia were found to behave differently. They were electrophoretically heterogeneous and contained both α and λ chains in four of nine cases.

“…The commercial bovine and camel chymosin products used in this investigation originate from production in A. niger (Harboe, 1992;Kappeler et al, 2006). Natural bovine chymosin is found in two isoforms, A and B, which differ at residue 244, which is an Asp in the A form and a Gly in the B form (Foltmann, 1966).…”

“…In the second and largest group, increased titres of cold haemagglutinins occur transiently in association with infectious diseases such as primary atypical pneumonia due to MycopEmma pneumoniue, and some virus diseases. An increased concentration of yMglobulin of the polyclonal type is usually found in this group, and the cold haemagglutinin itself often appears to be polyclonal (Harboe & Lind 1966, Costea et al 1966, Feizi 1967. The cold haemagglutinin titres are generally lower in the transient than in the chronic disease.…”

“…The eluates were tested in gel diffusion experiments against specific anti-yG, anti-),A, anti-yM, anti-K and anti-L. All cold haemagglutinins behaved in these tests as yM-globulins with K light chains. Ten of these cold agglutinins were included in the materials previously published from this laboratory (Harboe et al 1965b, Harboe & Lind 1966 where the vast majority of cold haemagglutinins from chronic cases were shown to contain K chains.…”

“…Cold auto antibodies of high titre are 'monoclonal' paraproteins, except for those rare cases in which they occur transiently as polyclonal IgM-antibodies in the course of virus infections (Harboe & Lind 1966). Monoclonal cold antibodies belong to the ;"lK-type (Harboe et al 1965).…”
