Light and scanning electron microscopic study of Balantidium ctenopharyngodoni Chen, 1955 (Class: Litostomatea) from China

Abstract: Redescription of Balantidium ctenopharyngodoni "Chen (Acta Hydrobiol Sin 1:123-164, 1955)", collected from the hindgut of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), especially the segment of 6-10 cm upstream from the anus, from Honghu Lake, Hubei Province, central China in November 2005, is presented in this paper to complete Chen's description at both light and scanning electron microscopic levels. Some revisions were done: the vestibulum is fairly symmetrical, with compactly arranged cilia rather than assembled m… Show more

“…Balantidium ctenopharyngodoni Chen, 1955 is a native species of China and a common obligatory intestinal parasite of grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idella ). It was first discovered and simply documented by Chen [ 2 ], then, its morphology redescribed [ 20 ], pathogenicity [ 28 ], ultrastructural anatomy [ 22 ] and related molecular phylogeny [ 22 , 24 ] were studied, respectively. As for phylogenetic analysis, the related studies reconstructed the phylogenetic trees only based on the small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) gene.…”

“…This species of Balantidium has been observed, sometimes at least, to be a true parasite (Molnár & Reinhardt 1978). Thereafter, the redescription and some revisions were given at both light and scanning electronic microscopic levels (Li et al 2007). However, the morphological data are still incomplete since no transmission electron microscopic study had been carried out.…”

“…In the past 7 years, our research group mainly focused on the taxonomy and phylogenetic analysis of banlantidia that inhabiting freshwater fish [1-5] and amphibians [6]. To our knowledge, 19 fish balantidia including 13 freshwater species and 6 marine species and 30 amphibian balantidia containing 26 species from anura amphibians and other 5 species from urodele amphibians ( B. elongatum was found in both Rana esculenta and Triton taeniatus ) have been discovered to date whose summaries were presented in Li et al [1] and Li et al [6], respectively.…”
