Light- and pH-responsive self-healing hydrogel

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were adopted to compare the enhanced mechanical and tribological properties of nitrile rubber composites reinforced by different functionalized graphene sheets. Functional groups such as hydroxyl (OH), carboxyl (COOH), and ester (COOCH3) were adopted. The constant strain method was applied to measure the mechanical properties of graphene/nitrile rubber composites. Sandwiched molecular models were developed to investigate the tribological properties of graphene/nitrile rubber composites by applying a shear load. The MD simulation results showed that the incorporation of functionalized graphene enhanced the Young's modulus, bulk modulus, and shear modulus of the nitrile rubber matrix. In addition, the coefficient of friction and abrasion rate of the functionalized graphene/nitrile rubber composites decreased. The mechanisms for the interfacial interactions between the functionalized graphene and nitrile rubber matrix were determined by calculating the mean square displacement of rubber chains, binding energy, and the radial distribution function between functional groups and polar atoms in the rubber matrix, respectively. The results of the atomistic simulations indicated that stronger interfacial interactions and better stability and dispersion of graphene in rubber matrices can be obtained by introducing functionalized graphene. Owing to the combination of hydrogen bonding and strong van der Waals interactions, the COOH‐functionalized graphene behaves the best effect on the enhancement of mechanical and tribological properties of the nitrile rubber composites.

A number of well-controlled amphiphilic copolymers of poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine-co-azobenzene methacrylamide) (PMA), carrying both cell outer membrane mimetic phosphorylcholine zwitFVterion groups and ultraviolet (UV)-sensitive hydrophobic azobenzene units, were prepared by reversible addition−fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization and applied to fabricate a novel UV/near-infrared (NIR) dual-responsive cell membrane mimetic micelle through the encapsulation of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) into PMA micelles. The diameter of the UCNPs@PMA micelles could be well-controlled by adjusting the feeding ratio between UCNPs and PMA. The obtained UCNPs@PMA micelles displayed a controllable drugrelease performance by tuning the duration of UV/NIR-light irradiation. Furthermore, the UCNPs@PMA micelles showed enhanced biocompatibility and a remarkable NIR-triggered therapeutic effect. Interestingly, doxorubicin-loaded UCNPs@PMA micelles showed pH-responsive drug release and much higher cytotoxicity of the tumor cell than of the normal cell after NIR laser irradiation. Therefore, the UCNPs@PMA micelles may serve as a powerful on-demand chemotherapy platform in cancer therapy via the NIR-light-triggered drug-release ability.

Background: Hydrogels, a type of three-dimensional (3-D) crosslinked network of polymers containing a high water concentration, have been receiving increasing attention in recent years. Self-healing hydrogels, which can return to their original structure and function after physical damage, are especially attractive. Some selfhealable hydrogels have several kinds of properties such as injectability, adhesiveness, and conductivity, which enable them to be used in the manufacturing of drug/cell delivery vehicles, glues, electronic devices, and so on. Main Body: This review will focus on the synthesis and applications of self-healing hydrogels. Their repair mechanisms and potential applications in pharmaceutical, biomedical, and other areas will be introduced. Conclusion: Self-healing hydrogels are used in various fields because of their ability to recover. The prospect of self-healing hydrogels is promising, and they may be further developed for various applications.
