Lifting a sessile oil drop from a superamphiphobic surface with an impacting one

Abstract: Colliding drops are encountered in everyday technologies and natural processes, from combustion engines and commodity sprays to raindrops and cloud formation. The outcome of a collision depends on many factors, including the impact velocity and the degree of alignment, and intrinsic properties like surface tension. Yet, little is known on binary impact dynamics of low-surface-tension drops on a low-wetting surface. We investigate the dynamics of an oil drop impacting an identical sessile drop sitting on a supe… Show more

“…The vapour generation drives the flow and hence, work is performed. This kinetic energy is dissipated along the gap by both the wall and the liquid drop, 46,47 where, for the latter, its strength scales with the viscosity and the length scale (a 1 /R) 2 . The Marangoni stress also performs work and thus acts as an energy source.…”

“…The splashing of the impacted drop initiates at higher impact Weber number and leads to the breakup of the impacted droplet into multiple tiny droplet [6,7]. In practical applications, along with the impact dynamics of a single drop, multi-drop impact and interactions are also important [8]. The merged droplet can jump from a superhydrophobic surface due to the conversion of the excess surface energy of the coalesced droplet into kinetic energy [9].…”
