Lift laparoscopy in dogs and cats: 12 cases (2008–2009)

Abstract: Results suggested that lift laparoscopy is feasible in dogs and cats and is an option that can be used in clinical practice, especially if creation of positive-pressure pneumoperitoneum is not desirable.

“…18,23,39,44 Lift laparoscopy is a feasible alternative to traditional capnoperitoneum laparoscopy and has been used in clinical dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy. [45][46][47] A custommade elliptical lift device is inserted into the peritoneal cavity via a ventral midline stab incision and traction is applied to provide a working space for the desired laparoscopic procedure. Lift location and number of lift devices (eg, 2 lift devices applied simultaneously with 1 in a more cranial location and the other placed caudally) may provide better access to different portions of the peritoneal cavity.…”

“…However, lift laparoscopy in women has been performed on mildly sedated, awake patients, with local anesthesia of a level allowing the patient to walk to and from the surgery suite . We have performed lift laparoscopy in 1 dog under sedation and opioid infusion . To our knowledge, capnoperitoneum laparoscopy without general anesthesia has not been reported in dogs.…”

“…[37][38][39] In the original technique described by Rawlings and colleagues, 37 the first (camera) portal is inserted on the ventral midline just caudal to the umbilicus, and after establishment of pneumoperitoneum, a second portal is placed lateral to the right rectus abdominus muscle. A laparoscopic Babcock forceps introduced through the lateral portal is used to grasp the duodenum and elevate it to the incision made for the cannula.…”

“…This technique has also subsequently been reported to have been performed using lift laparoscopy instead of pneumoperitoneum to generate working space within the abdomen. 39 Laparoscopic-assisted colopexy Techniques for LA incisional colopexy have been reported in a case report of a single cat 40 and a small case series of dogs. 41 Permanent adhesions were created between the descending colon and body wall, using an LA extracorporeally sutured technique.…”
