Networked optical wireless communication, also denoted as LiFi, is expected to play an important role in so-called smart hospitals. In this paper, we present the first experimental study of LiFi in an operating room at Motol University Hospital in Prague, Czech Republic. First, we perform one-to-one measurements using an optical transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) and observe that channels with a free LOS provide sufficient signal strength for mobile communication inside the operating room. Then we combine the individual LOS links into a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) link using four distributed transmitters representing a wireless infrastructure, and six distributed receivers representing medical devices. In this configuration, at least two strong singular values of the MIMO channel matrix are observed which allow spatial multiplexing. By appropriately clustering the transmitters and selecting the users, mobile devices can be served in parallel. For data transmission, several multiplexing schemes such as time-division multiple access (TDMA) with one and two best links, TDMA with spatial reuse, space-division multiple access (SDMA) with two best links with and without zero forcing (ZF) are considered. Results show that SDMA with ZF increases the data rate by 2.7 times compared to baseline TDMA, resulting in a total data rate of 600 Mbit/s.

This paper aims to show that Li-Fi now reached a state, where it can be considered a reliable wireless communication solution for future technologies. Currently, the Internet can be accessed using Wi-Fi, but it has its limitations too. It is sufficient for current Internet services but insufficient with IoT and cloud-based services. In the upcoming decade, hard drives will be obsolete and everything will be on the cloud. Modern Web applications i.e., 4K & 8K videos, games, high-resolution photos, etc. require fast bandwidth. Li-Fi opens a reliable door for the end-users to access future technology-based services at high speed.

Problem: The increase in wireless devices connected to the internet, saturation of the electromagnetic spectrum used by wireless technologies based on current radio frequencies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, among others), new requirements for bandwidth, speeds and energy efficiency for the new generations of telecommunications are the cause of the birth of Li-Fi as an alternative and / or complementary technology of wireless telecommunication that is based on the visible light spectrum. Objective: The objective of this research is to expose the development of Li-Fi technology in the field of telecommunications, covering it in three main aspects such as the current state of technology, recent advances, and future projections. Methodology: Different types of bibliographic sources were used, including research and opinion articles, marketing studies, forums, books, conferences, among others with a publication date of 2012 onwards (some exceptions are found in the references); taking as selection criteria title, authors, date of publication, abstract, results and / or conclusions in relation to the research guidelines (Current Status, Advances and Future Projection of Li-Fi technology) Conclusion: The literature review article manages to highlight the importance of Li-Fi in the new generations of telecommunications of the future and its complementarity with current networks, optimally contextualizing the technology, exposing its advantages and recent advances in technical and commercial aspects as well like its disadvantages and points. weaknesses that should be addressed in the development of this technology in the future

LiFi Experiments in a Hospital

Abstract: We present LiFi channel measurements in a neurosurgery room of Motol University Hospital in Prague. Individual channels are combined into a virtual multiuser MIMO link. We report achievable data rates for different LiFi transmission schemes.
