LiFi Experiments in a Hospital

Abstract: We present LiFi channel measurements in a neurosurgery room of Motol University Hospital in Prague. Individual channels are combined into a virtual multiuser MIMO link. We report achievable data rates for different LiFi transmission schemes.

“…Our results demonstrate the possibility to provide individual data rates of at least 30 Mbit/s for each device and a sum data rate higher than 500 Mbit/s for all devices on the operating table. Preliminary results were published in [21]. In this paper, we extend our study and provide the following main contributions:…”

“…The proposed prototype uses a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor carried by a patient and Li-Fi receiver may be installed in ceiling of room for wireless transfer of vital signs of patient to cloud [32] [33], central monitoring unit or anywhere hospital administration deems suitable. In work [34], the researchers examined the implementation of Li-Fi in a typical neurosurgery operation room of a hospital. Researcher examined various locations for transmitter and receiver for best wireless communication using Li-Fi as shown in Figure 3 [34].…”

“…These were the first experimental tests in a medical setting, and they reveal an important basis for defining the following Li-Fi systems in similar environments. [18] These advances have led to the establishment of several commercial Li-Fi solutions companies such as pureLifi, Global LiFi Tech or Signify. These companies, in the company of various collaborators, have managed to design and assemble Li-Fi systems in various environments:…”
