Lifetime of the Cs 6P1/2 state in bcc and hcp solid 4He

Abstract: Abstract. We present the first experimental study of time-resolved fluorescence from laser-excited Cs(6P 1/2 ) atoms isolated in a solid 4 He matrix. The results are compared to the predictions of the bubble model including the interaction of the atomic dipole with its radiation reflected at the bubble interface. Our results show that in liquid He as well as in the body-centered cubic (bcc) crystalline phase of He the lifetime of excited Cs atoms does not depend on He pressure, in agreement with our theory. Wh… Show more

“…For time-resolved measurements two modifications of the same setup were used. The lifetime of the atomic 6P 1/2 state of Cs was studied [134] using a time-resolved single photon counting technique. Radiation from a pulsed diode laser at 850 nm (10 kHz repetition rate) excited the implanted atoms and a single-photon counting photomultiplier (PM) detected the light analyzed by the spectrograph.…”

“…An experimental study of the Cs 6P 1/2 lifetime in solid He has been presented in [134]. In that study a time-correlated photon counting technique was used and the data were taken both in bcc and hcp solid He matrices.…”

“…where Ω is the solid angle of the collected light (0.12 sr), κ is the transmission efficiency of the detection beam estimated to be 0.38 at 880 nm, η is the fluorescence efficiency for the D1 line measured to be 0.9 at 25 bar (26). This formula takes into account the fact that the waist of Ti:Sa beam in the cell (0.3 mm) is smaller than the diameter of the area seen by the APD detector (l det = 1.1 mm).…”

“…The atomicbubble energetics are illustrated in fig. 1 by a potential diagram derived in [13] for a Cs atom in condensed He. The bubble shape and size are determined by the dopant's electron density distribution that differs significantly for the excited and ground states.…”
