Lifetime measurement of the metastable3dD522state in the

Abstract: We present a measurement of the lifetime of the metastable 3d 2 D 5/2 state in the 40 Ca + ion, using the so-called shelving technique on a string of five Doppler laser-cooled ions in a linear Paul trap. A detailed account of the data analysis is given, and systematic effects due to unwanted excitation processes and collisions with background gas atoms are discussed and estimated. From a total of 6805 shelving events, we obtain a lifetime = 1149± 14͑stat. ͒ ±4͑sys. ͒ms, a result which is in agreement with the … Show more

“…3(b) to Eq. (4) gives the characteristic lifetime T DCRT 1 = 1130(47) ms for the DCRT technique (green line) and T trad 1 = 1160(30) ms for the traditional method (blue dotted line), which are in good agreement with previously measured values [28] of 1148(18) ms.…”

“…Due to the heralding, high fidelity will be achieved independent of the efficiency of the process. We describe in detail the requirements and conditions for such heralded quantum storage processes for the case of singly ionized calcium-40, the species used in our [8][9][10][11] and other experiments [12][13][14][15][16]. Application to other species is straightforward.…”

“…Superradiance and subradiance at the level of ±1 % has been experimentally observed in the 6p 2 P 1/2 to 6s 2 S 1/2 decay rate in a pair of Ba + ions separated by about 1.5 µm [203]. Also in an ensemble of 10 Ca + ions, some unexpected double jumps were reported [194], but subsequent experiments with greater statistics found no correlations or enhanced double or triple jump rates [175][176][177]. In our experiment, the distance between ions is typically around 10 µm (see Section 3.5) and thus we expect cooperative effects between ions to be negligible.…”

“…An early lifetime measurement in Ba + reported some indication of cooperative effects in an experiment with multiple ions [173], although later calculations show this explanation to be unlikely [174]. Correlation effects and a dependence of the lifetime on the number of stored ions have also been investigated in trapped Ca + ions [175][176][177], where within experimental uncertainty no dependence was found. The long-lived levels in Ba + are particularly sensitive to perturbations as their lifetimes are more than an order of magnitude longer than those of the other species.…”
