Lifetime measurement of the 5d2 D 5/2 state in Ba+

Abstract: The lifetime of the metastable 5d 2 D 5/2 state has been measured for a single trapped Ba + ion in a Paul trap in Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) in the 10 −10 mbar pressure range. A total of 5046 individual periods when the ion was shelved in this state have been recorded. A preliminary value τ D 5/2 = 26.4(1.7) s is obtained through extrapolation to zero residual gas pressure.

“…Considering typical metastable state lifetimes (e.g. τ ∼ 60 ms for 2 D 3/2 in Yb + [167], τ ∼ 26 s for 2 D 5/2 in Ba + [168] or τ ∼ 3700 days for 2 F 7/2 in Yb + [169,170]), this error can be made negligible depending on the atomic levels in use. Qubit hiding also allows to use the ions that have been measured for sympathetic recooling to eliminate the heating of the shared motional modes induced by the measurement.…”

“…One method is to use a particle accelerator. This technique is used at the triumf [124] and isolde facilities [125] and has previously been used in our group to study the neutron-poor isotopes [209][210][211][212][213][214] Ra [45,49,64]. However, for further experiments an offline source was desired for greater flexibility and simplicity.…”

“…This should be considered to replace the lifetime value of Ref.166. An incomplete analysis of a subset of the same data was published previously as Ref 21246.…”
