Lifetime-extended MCP-PMT

Abstract: In order to develop a long-lifetime MCP-PMT under high rates of circumstance, we investigated the degradation of the quantum efficiency (QE) of PMT's with a multialkali photocathode. We found that not only positive ions, but also neutral residual gases would damage the photocathode resulting in an enhancement of the work function; their countermeasures were established in newly manufactured square-shaped MCP-PMT's with 4 or 4×4 multi-anodes. The performances of the PMT's were measured: QE was stable up to an i… Show more

“…The lifetime with an almost complete break down of the QE after 305 mC cm 2 is still not sufficient, although a quite reasonable improvements compared to the previous XP85012 model was obtained (figure 4). Recent developments of both Hamamatsu [10] and Photonis seem promising in achieving higher lifetimes in the order of several C cm 2 . Further measurements of lifetime extended MCP-PMTs of both companies will be performed soon.…”

“…The ALD-MCP-PMT has a longer lifetime than the conventional one because the ALD layer prevents outgassing, which is known to be the source of the QE degradation [9], caused by the secondary electrons impinging on the MCP substrate.…”

“…The preferred solution was found by placing the film between the first and second MCP. In addition to the film, a ceramic insulator was implemented to seal the anode region of the tube with respect to the cathode region [71]. This followed the speculation that neutral molecular gas molecules are desorbed during the multiplication process in the MCP.…”
