Lifetime Expectancy of Li-Ion Batteries used for Residential Solar Storage

Abstract: This paper analyses the degradation that is experienced by different types of Li-ion batteries when used as home solar storage systems controlled to minimize the electricity bill of the corresponding household. Simulating the annual operation of photovoltaic (PV) residential systems with batteries at different locations was undertaken to perform the study and it uses actual consumption values and real PV production profiles, as well as validated semi-empirical ageing models of the batteries. Therefore, the wor… Show more

“…Subsequently, the management of the battery is fundamental in order to preserve it and reduce the degradation rate. Moreover, a maximum life expectancy of 10 years is considered for precautionary reasons as most suppliers suggest [59]. The cost of the battery directly depends on the capacity.…”

“…As before, the following materials were considered to implement the off-grid option: [64], expectancy lifetime of a lithiumion battery under real operation conditions is between 8 and 12 years. We choose 8 years, the lower value, since in this design phase we do not know the real conditions of the batteries (temperature, depth of discharge, etc.…”

“…Studies, that use an actual ageing model for battery ageing and in which Li-ion batteries are applied, are [9,12,14,16,21,26,40,[49][50][51][52]. While the aforementioned studies also consider the economics of the systems, Sandelic et al [53] and Beltran et al [54] also use an aging model for LIB, but their studies are mainly aimed at identifying and maximizing the lifetime of the battery and power electronics. Four studies are known that investigate the extent to which battery aging affects PV storage system economics and sizing [12][13][14]31].…”
