In this paper design of DC-DC boost converter with constant current control, charging is presented to charge the battery of electric vehicles. The different methods of battery charging are discussed. The charging profile of different types of batteries is investigated and compared with respect to charging time. The battery current is sensed and compared with a reference current and the generated actuating signal which is an error is feed to PI controller to compute a duty cycle of boost converter for constant current operation. A 6 V dc supply is obtained by using a step down transformer and diode rectifier. Boost converter parameters are designed for continuos conduction mode operation. The limiting values of duty cycle are fixed in the range of 0.5 to 0.6 for constant current operation. Simulation is carried out using MATLAB software for constant current operation connected to a 50 Ah, 12 V battery load. The constant current operation is achieved using negative feedback control. The switching frequency of boost converter is set to 20 kHz. The filter components are also designed to reduce ripple content within limited values. The simulation result shows the effectiveness of charging control for hardware implementation.

This paper proposes a new DC output voltage control for a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a lithium-ion battery based on the state of charge (SoC). The proposed control scheme was verified through computer simulations for a typical stand-alone DC microgrid, which consists of a BESS, photovoltaic (PV) panel, engine generator (EG), and DC load. A scaled hardware prototype for a stand-alone DC microgrid was set up in the lab, in which the proposed control scheme was loaded in a DSP controller. The experimental results were compared with the simulation results for performance verification. The proposed control scheme provides relatively lower variation of the DC grid voltage than the conventional droop control.

Currently, many researchers from industry and academic institutions are working on the study of electric vehicles, battery systems and renewable energy sources (solar, wind, geothermal, etc.). In order to carry out research on each of these technologies it is required large capital investment for equipment. Additionally, problems must be faced such as variability of environmental parameters, large space requirements, pollution (in some cases), etc. The use of software and hardware to emulate different types of actual batteries shows to be a low-cost and environmentally friendly option due to some of its features. The battery emulator system has the ability to replicate the behavior of any kind of actual battery using a virtual battery model (also known as battery electric model) and a controllable DC/DC power converter to be used in laboratory environments. Moreover, emulators are not only used for batteries, these can be used to emulate fuel cells, photovoltaic systems, wind generators, thermoelectric generator, etc. This survey aims to present the technologies to implement battery emulators based on DC/DC power converters. This survey is split up into five sections. In the first section, as an introduction, we present the advantages offered by the use of battery emulators to the scientific community and the environment. The second section presents a review about batteries (technologies, models, model parameters, etc.) and also it includes the virtual battery models, which are the main components of battery emulators based on DC/DC power converters. In the third section, we present the main DC/DC power converter types used in these systems and their operation modes. Additionally, in section 4 are presented some case studies where different topologies battery emulators based on DC/DC power converters with battery model are analyzed.
