“…Overall, the highest prison sentences were allocated to homicide offenders, with an average of about 17 years, and only 7% of their sample selected LWOP (1.3% chose the death penalty). In the case of a violent homicide, Mireles (2012) had undergraduate participants read vignettes that varied the age and race of the juvenile defendant and were asked to determine if he was guilty and, if so, to select the appropriate sentence (from 20 to 25 years, 25 to life, life with parole, or LWOP). Nearly the entire sample found the defendant guilty and, collapsing across conditions, approximately 40% selected LWOP as their preferred penalty.…”
