“…In one case report, a 66 year old female patient visited the emergency room and had serum sodium level of 107 mEq/L after low-iodine diet for thyroid ablation, and the author suggested that prolonged low-iodine diet, low salt intake, and use of thiazide diuretics in elderly patients were risk factors for the development of life-threatening hyponatremia [8]. As can be seen in previous case reports [6][10], most of the patients were above 60 years of age and all of the patients showed quite severe hyponatremia with serum sodium levels ranging from 107 mEq/L to 121 mEq/L.…”

“…Inducing distinctive hypothyroidism with thyroid hormone withdrawal and a low-iodine diet is an essential condition for accurate examination. However, there is a possibility that related complications can occur [3,4,5,6,11]. …”

“…However, it is rare to find severe hyponatremia related to hypothyroidism caused by thyroid hormone withdrawal in a patient with thyroid cancer [3,4,5,6,7]. Baajafer et al [7] reported that there were no complications by hypothyroid status induced by thyroid hormone withdrawal among 128 patients who underwent surgery with differentiated thyroid cancer, only five of them were presenting hyponatremia with a serum sodium level of 135 mEg/L and no cases were witnessed with a serum sodium level lower than 130 mEq/L.…”
