Life-Style and Serum Lipids and Lipoproteins

Abstract: In reviewing the trends and influences of life-style in this country on health and disease in the latter half of 20th century, we focused our attention on 4 major habits of smoking, drinking, exercise and diets, and collected data on the Japanese to conduct a meta-analysis of their relationship with serum lipids and lipoproteins, which are the metabolic risk factors most closely related to atherosclerosis. 1) The percentage of smokers was 54.0% in adult males and 14.5% in adult females in 1999. In the data of … Show more

“…The present study also found that the amount of physical activity was positively correlated with serum HDL-C concentrations. These observations are consistent with data from the meta-analyses 23) , indicating that physically active individuals have significantly higher concentrations of HDL-C than their sedentary counterparts. Also, meta-analysis of previous studies suggested that a higher training volume (i.e.…”

“…Indeed, in the present study, we employed only 8 weeks as compared to the previous one that was performed over a period of 24 weeks. Furthermore, previous studies have demonstrated that the volume of exercise training is more important in favoring health-promoting effects than its intensity (25,26).…”

“…Japan has experienced a westernization of dietary habits and the nutrient intake pattern has changed, resulting in a change in CVD risk factors, including serum lipid profiles 19,[25][26][27][28] . Requests are increasing for a dietary assessment method that enables medical workers to practice effective dietary intervention, and the development of a sophisticated method to estimate long-term usual intake is needed.…”
