Life-Space Mobility and Relevant Factors in Community-dwelling Individuals with Stroke in Japan: A Cross-sectional Study

Abstract: Objective: Individuals with stroke frequently experience mobility deficits and limited community reintegration. This study aimed to investigate life-space mobility and relevant factors in community-living individuals with stroke. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 46 community-dwelling individuals with chronic stroke in Japan (mean age 72.7 ± 7.4 years; mean time post-stroke 63.6 ± 43.3 months; 26 men/20 women). We measured life-space mobility using a Japanese translation of the Life-Space Assessment… Show more

“…2 Life space measures may relate more closely with constructs such as self-efficacy, personal control beliefs, or community integration. 15,16 Simple to administer, LSQ captures a construct not assessed by functional measures of mobility such as gait metrics and PEQ. 2 Functional mobility and walking speed assess perceived or performance-based individual mobility, not the accessed life space.…”

“…Moreover, a moderate correlation between the LSA and walking speed was reported for community-dwelling older adults with stroke. 13 This finding may be explained in part by the nature of these measures. 5,11,21,22 Simply put, the LSA measures the extent of community mobility performance, such as walking, within the spatial environment.…”

“…It has been shown to correlate with physical performance, 11 activities of daily living, walking speed, and fear of falling in the older adult population. 13 Measuring physical activity is also important because physical activity decreases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, falls, muscular weakness, and mortality in older adults. 14,15 Physical activity can be measured with self-report questionnaires, such as the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE), 16 or tools that provide objective measures such as accelerometers.…”
