Life satisfaction and inflammatory biomarkers: The 2008 Scottish Health Survey1

Abstract: Positive psychological attributes have been associated with better health outcomes, although the mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study examined associations between life satisfaction and inflammatory biomarkers. Participants were 369 men and 428 women (aged 52.1 Ϯ 16.8 years) recruited from the general population. Participants were required to rate their life satisfaction on a scale ranging from 0 (extremely dissatisfied) to 10 (extremely satisfied). Blood was collected for the measurement of C-react… Show more

“…Grant, Wardle, & Steptoe (2009) Across 21 nations life satisfaction was related to more exercise and less smoking, eating fruit and limiting fat intake, and using sun protection, with the first two being consistent across regions and the latter ones showing differences. Hamer and Chida (2011) Life satisfaction predicted lower levels of smoking and Body Mass Index. Hamilton et al (2007) Hedonic well-being was inversely associated with health behaviors such as smoking and sleep disturbances.…”

“…Inflammation biomarkers such as C-reactive protein and fibrinogen could be a possible mediating link. Inflammation biomarkers have been found to be negatively associated with positive affect in general (Shirom, Toker, Melamed, Berliner, & Shapira, 2010) and with life satisfaction in particular (Hamer & Chida, 2011), and have been shown to be more pronounced and prolonged in individuals at risk of diabetes (Haffner, 2003;Kolb & Mandrup-Poulsen, 2010). Yet another possible mechanism is represented by health behaviors such as overeating or a sedentary lifestyle.…”

“…To capture chronic inflammation well, the biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP) has a couple of attributes (Pepys and Hirschfield 2003). Circulating CRP has been associated with various quality-of-life indicators (Nowakowski 2014;Hamer and Chida 2011). Circulating CRP is in part genetically determined.…”
