PurposeThe significance of well-being in social development policy and practice is increasingly acknowledged by scholars and practitioners worldwide. Nevertheless, when examining well-being within the context of Global South trends, existing conceptualisations seem to yield incongruent indicators. Given the background, this paper aims to synthesise theoretical and empirical literature on well-being to foster an understanding of well-being in contemporary Global South.Design/methodology/approachThis article reviews the now large literature on the well-being in the Global South. The article begins with a discussion of the contributions of state-of-the-art developments in well-being studies, a realm experiencing remarkable growth in social policy studies. It then turns to the prominent well-being constructs that have garnered considerable attention within the literature, with an examination of the Global North and Global South context followed by reinterpretation of these concepts to facilitate a comprehensive study of well-being beyond the realms of welfare states. Concluding the narrative, a succinct outline of potential pathways for future research is presented in the final section.FindingsThe review reveals that the concept of well-being in the Global South does not necessarily deviate entirely from the prevailing belief that the region is fundamentally distinct from the Global North on a conceptual level. The authors have discovered that three core dimensions of well-being, namely objective, subjective and relational, are observable across societal boundaries due to the diffusion of knowledge and social and cultural practices that have progressively aligned them with Global North-style modernisation. An exception arises in the relational aspect, where the attainment of positive collective relationships precedes individual happiness to some extent. The paper advances a renewed perspective on well-being, portraying it as a situational, interconnected, collective undertaking and continuous process. These approaches empower the researchers to address the overarching question of which analytical foundations can most effectively uncover the intricacies of well-being in diverse and contemporary circumstances.Originality/valueThis paper helps the researchers to address the overarching question of which analytical foundations can most effectively uncover the intricacies of well-being in diverse and contemporary circumstances, thereby facilitating future enhancements in social policy design.

This study critically examines the multi-dimensional nature of poverty, its measurement challenges and modern methods of addressing it. In addition to income-based measures, poverty encompasses several dimensions that require a comprehensive understanding. A large body of literature was identified through a systematic search of several databases using relevant keywords. Through a rigorous filtering process, the selection was narrowed down to 88 articles, which are reviewed in depth to identify research gaps and contribute to the existing literature. The study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate indicators that capture the various aspects of poverty and go beyond monetary considerations. It highlights the importance of reliable and timely data, standardised measurement approaches and subjective assessments of well-being to capture people's life experiences. Multidimensional poverty indices, such as the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) and the Capabilities Approach, are known to provide comprehensive measurements and information for targeted interventions. By addressing research gaps on the multi-dimensional nature of poverty, this study aims to improve understanding and contribute to evidence-based policies and interventions to promote inclusive societies and comprehensive poverty reduction efforts.

The Psychology of Well-Being in the Margins: Voices from and Prospects for South Asia and Southeast Asia

Research and publications on the psychology of well-being have steadily increased in recent decades, but research on the peoples of South Asian and Southeast Asian is quite underrepresented in the research literature. Even as people from the regions comprise one third of the current global population, studies on well-being of individuals and groups from countries in the two regions are disproportionately fewer compared to other countries and regions. The special issue is a modest attempt to call attention to this underrepresentation, and to individuals and groups that are in the margins of these societies. The special issue features 11 empirical studies focused on well-being of people who either face economic hardships, have low-status occupations, experience discrimination due to gender, or experience physical disabilities. The studies highlight how well-being can be conceptualized as an adaptive process, which involves finding meaning and coping and drawing from one’s agency and resources. The studies in the special, while limited in scope, will hopefully serve as catalyst for further research on the psychology of well-being in the two regions in ways that will enrich global theory and research.
