LIFE HISTORY STUDIES OF THE LESSER SNOW GOOSE (ANSER CAERULESCENS CAERULESCENS). III. THE SELECTIVE VALUE OF PLUMAGE POLYMORPHISM: NET FECUNDITY

Abstract: Between 1969 and 1977 the frequency of the blue phenotype of the dimorphic Lesser Snow Goose (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) showed a steady increase at the La Pérouse Bay colony near Churchill, Manitoba. Cooch (1961, 1963) suggested the global increase resulted from selection pressures favoring blue individuals. The selection hypothesis was evaluated by examining phenotypic differences in net fecundity. We partitioned the reproductive cycle into a series of stages, each defined by a particular index of fecu… Show more

“…This allows tagged goslings to be aged precisely (age = days since hatching) when captured during annual banding drives (late Julyearly August), and to be ascribed to specific nests and parents. General field methods are described in Finney and Cooke (1978) and Cooke et al (1985). SAS (SAS Institute 1985) was used for all statistical analyses.…”

“…Data were collected from 1969-1982 as part of a larger investigation of the breeding biology of Lesser Snow Geese at La Perouse Bay, near Churchill, Manitoba. A description ofthe study site and the general method of data collection are given in Cooke et al (1985).…”

“…The fecundity components are measured as a series of variables reflecting the period from egg laying to gosling fledging. The variables are precisely defined in Cooke et al (1985). Briefly they are: total clutch laid (TCL); clutch size at hatch (CSH); goslings leaving nest (GLN); brood size at fledging (BSF); egg survival (CSH/TCL); hatching success (GLN/CSH); and fledging success (BSF/GLN).…”
