“…Females reach much larger size than males, possibly investing a larger proportion of the available resources to reproduction as they grow (Barbieri et al 2000). The female-biased sex ratio, not unusual in species with marked sexual dimorphism, may be attributed to differential predation, as also postulated for V. hispanica (Caiola et al 2001b) and A. iberus (Vargas and Sostoa 1997).…”

“…The data of the current study indicate that the reproductive period of the species can be quite prolonged, extending from April or May to late September, a period of high water temperatures, with multiple reproductive peaks. V. letourneuxi is a e Dytiscidae; f Baetidae out of the 13 taxa contributing 90% of the seasonal dissimilarity in the species' diet serial spawner (Barbieri et al 2000) and in that it resembles the cyprinodontid Aphanius iberus (Vargas and Sostoa 1997;Oliva-Paterna et al 2006), as well as its related species V. hispanica that has, however, a less prolonged reproductive period (Caiola et al 2001b). The maximum total length of the specimens from Chiliadou stream was 66.9 mm (SL 56 mm), similar to that reported (Stephanidis 1974).…”

“…The Estuarine Quality Paradox concept (Dauvin, 2007;Elliott and Quintino, 2007) refers to the challenge of detecting anthropogenic impacts in naturally stressed systems using biological assessment methods. In Mediterranean regions and particularly in the Iberian Peninsula, besides the spatial fluctuation there is strong temporal environmental variability in the aquatic systems due to limited water availability during part of the year (Caiola et al, 2001;Ferreira et al, 2007a). This variability is exacerbated by a long history of human-induced pressures that have led to serious changes in the natural ecological cycles of estuarine systems from this region (Ferreira et al, 2007b).…”

“…Exceptionally, it may live in some wetlands like coastal lagoons and swamps. The species is characterized by slow growth and high longevity (4+females; 3+males) when compared to other Cyprinodontiformes (Caiola et al 2001a). It has a narrow trophic spectrum (gammarids, midges and isopods) (Caiola et al 2001b;Caiola and De Sostoa 2002).…”
