Life events and disability in rheumatoid arthritis: a European cohort

Abstract: SUMMARYThe objective was to study the relationship between life events (LE) and the clinical status of patients suering from recently diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a 2 yr follow-up. As part of a multicentre European cohort study, 370 French and Dutch patients were questioned three times at 1 yr intervals about LE which had occurred in the previous year. Three criteria were used to quantify the degree of disease activity (Ritchie's index), the level of functional disability [Health Assessment Questionn… Show more

“…This compares with a previous study (53) but is at variance with observed correlations of major life events (54) and minor stress (13) with ESR in RA. Also, pain did not correlate with life events in our study, and this agrees with the findings by Klages (9) but conflicts with the observation of correlation between next-day pain and daily hassles in patients with more disease activity and a history of major life events (6).…”

“…45 A study in a large sample of 370 patients with RA indicated that major life events do not affect the course of early RA in an obvious manner. 46 Patients were questioned three times at 1-year intervals about life events in the previous year. The occurrence of deaths of relatives or acquaintances did not seem to modify patient status.…”

“…Positive life events (and at a marginally significant level also negative life events) suggested a protective effect on functional disability, but these life events were not related to disease activity (Ritchie's index) or perceived overall health. 46 It has also been suggested that major life events may lead to a deterioration of health. Patients (n = 14) who reported to have experienced more severe life events in the past 6 months experienced more current physical disability.…”

“…The emotions they may feel (e.g. fear, anger, depression, 8–10 anxiety, 8,9 , 11,12 frustration combined with pain and physical limitations), to a great extent, can increase their level of stress 13,14 and destroy patients’ well‐being feelings 5,15 . So, the presence of significant psychological stress in the lives of people with RA is well documented.…”
