Life cycle of mesoscale convective systems

Abstract: Radar observations of the evolution and hierarchy of Cb clouds in different regions of the Earth are generalized to present the concept of a life cycle of a mesoscale convective system; during the life cycle, the separate Cb clouds develop into hierarchic coordinated mesoscale clusters, which recurrently originate and are localized in fixed places in the system which moves as a unit. The rising dominant clusters generate quasi-periodic oscillations of maximum intensity and wavelike space structure of the preci… Show more

“…One is the delay associated with the presence of mesoscale organization (X92, Figure 9). This is evidenced by the rapid onset and more gradual decline of the precipitation rate, which are characteristic of the life cycles of mesoscale convective systems [X92; Abdullaev et al , 2009]. Unfortunately, this mesoscale lag is not well captured by the lag detection method mentioned above.…”

“…Such structures are most clearly observed when studying the Cb radar echo fields in the Lagrange coordinate system. The existence of mesoscale structures in the fields of cumulonimbus clouds was corroborated afterwards during the studies not only in Moldova [12] but also in other regions [1,2]. The theoretical justification of their determinacy is also given [10].…”
