Life cycle assessment of wood construction according to the normative standards

Abstract: This study demonstrates life cycle assessment (LCA) on a reference wooden building according to the latest normative standards: EN 15804, EN 15978 and EN 16485. Through the assessment, application of the standards was studied. In addition, proposals for further development of the standards, especially concerning wood products and wood construction, are discussed from a practical perspective. Lack of proper data is critical issue in conducting the assessment in compliance with the standards. Since LCA is data-i… Show more

“…Communication of results and its usefulness to reduce environmental impacts of buildings and energy consummation of buildings are crucial in the LCA application. Takano et al [76] underlined the importance of the results communication, as a way to "stimulate environmental consciousness in society". According to EN 15978 [4] the communication of results includes the information about the environmental performance of the building and its characteristics.…”

“…On the other hand, Takano et al [19] studied the application of the standards EN 15978 [13] Therefore, despite literature assumes the need to introduce simplifications in the LCA method; few studies have studied the incidence of simplification strategies in the most significant typology in terms of CO2 emissions.…”

“…Scheme of the information modules for the different stages of evaluation of the building based on 15978 [13]. EN 15978 [13] is organized according to the "modules principle" of building life cycle, including the four stages of life cycle -product, construction, use, end of life-( [13,19]. These stages and modules are shown in Figure 1 and cover from A1 to C4 "impacts and environmental aspects" developed within the system boundary, while D modules cover benefits and loads that go beyond the system boundary.…”

“…For the sake of simplicity, one study [137] was allocated to furniture though the object under investigation rather belongs to household devices. A total of 14 studies do not follow a comparative approach [50,52,82,[138][139][140][141][142][143][144][145][146][147][148].…”
