Abstract:The building sector is one of the crucial stakeholders in the global energy and environmental scenario. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a tool widely used to evaluate the environmental performance of buildings, materials and activities. Saudi Arabia has a rapidly growing construction sector with over $1 Trillion of ongoing projects. The housing sector, annually needing over 2.32 million new residential units in coming years, is yet to entertain environmental performance of buildings in its list of priorities. The present work undertakes a LCA study of a three-bedroom modern villa located in Dhahran. Providing the structural details of the villa, an account of the 18 main construction materials in terms of quantity and application has been produced. Embodied energy of these materials has been estimated adopting 'cradle-to-gate' approach. Environmental impacts of the materials have been modeled with the help of SimaPro software. The results suggest that concrete accounts for more than 43% of the total embodied energy of the house and is also the predominant material in terms of the overall environmental impacts. Steel is the second most prominent material both in terms of quantity and embodied energy.

More than 60 million homes in India are unfit for decent living. Replacing this stock with decent housing will entail significant costs and increase energy consumption and related CO 2 emissions due to both upfront and long-term energy requirements. This paper assesses the life cycle costs (LCC), life cycle energy (LCE) and CO 2 emissions impacts of filling the current housing gap with different building materials and technologies, and maintaining reasonable standards of indoor temperature and humidity. These outcomes are assessed under different climatic conditions and residential behavioural patterns, using urban and rural housing archetypes, and considering conventional as well as low-cost materials and energy-savings measures. The results demonstrate that stabilized-earth blocks are a preferred solution to the prevailing norm of fired bricks. Along with filler slab and roof insulation, they offer a win-win solution to reduce both LCC by 18% and LCE by 17% compared with conventional techniques in bridging the housing gap. LCE savings can be further increased to 28% without increasing the investment cost compared with conventional solutions. The insights provided by this study on abatement costs and efficacy can be used by policy-makers for affordable housing and climate-related policies.

Environmental performances assessment of urban projects is essential to meet the current challenges of urban sustainable development. In recent years, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been applied to urban scale to assess complex systems such as districts, urban facilities and territories. Yet, application of LCA to large scale is challenging in terms of data modelling. To overcome this challenge, integration of Building Information Model (BIM) to LCA could reduce efforts during the data acquisition, as well as allowing the feedback of LCA results into BIM. To ensure interoperability e.g. with energy simulation tools, digital mock-up using an open information standard must be preferred. To answer this need, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) developed the open standard CityGML which is an XML-based data model that defines classes and relations for 3D object in cities (e.g. buildings, roads, water bodies etc.). This format also provides for domain-specific extension to other objects or attributes using Application Domain Extensions (ADE). To date, LCA data requirements have not been fully integrated into the CityGML format nor its ADE. The aim of this paper is to propose extension of CityGML and Energy-ADE standards for exchanging information for LCA simulation at urban scale. The scope of the study is limited to the integration of information necessary for LCA of buildings' construction and renovation.
