Life cycle assessment (LCA) of solid waste management strategies in Tehran: landfill and composting plus landfill

Abstract: As circumstances of operating and maintenance activities for landfilling and composting in Tehran metropolis differ from those of cities in developed countries, it was concluded to have an environmental impact comparison between the current solid waste management (MSW) strategies: (1) landfill, and (2) composting plus landfill. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to compare these scenarios for MSW in Tehran, Iran. The Eco-Indicator 99 is applied as an impact assessment method considering surplus energy, clima… Show more

“…facility for reducing the amount of landfilled waste for waste management scenarios in Wales. In comparing direct landfilling with landfilling plus composting for the management of solid waste in Teheran, Abduli et al (2011) found that aerobic biological treatments generated higher acidification compared to direct landfilling. On the contrary direct landfilling led to a higher ozone depletion impact, but to resource depletion benefits (i.e.…”

“…With the rapid economic growth and urbanization in China, municipal solid waste (MSW) generation and management is becoming a major social and environmental issue (Li et al 2009;Chen et al 2010;Cheng and Hu 2010;Zhang et al 2010;Abduli et al 2011;Ghanbari et al 2012;Che et al 2013;Song et al 2013). Since the reform and opening up in 1978, China's per capita income has increased annually.…”

“…LCA effectively assesses and mitigates the possible environmental impacts during all the phases of a MSWM facility, e.g., climate change, ecotoxicity, respiratory effects, etc. In past studies, integrated waste management options have been identified as the most sustainable practice for minimizing both the cost and environmental impacts, for instance, landfilling and composting alone or in combination [35].…”
