Schellackia orientalis n. sp. parasitises the Japanese lizard Takydromus tachydromoides on Honshu and Takydromus sexlineatus in Thailand. Merogony and gamogony occur in the epithelium of the small intestine, and octonucleate o6cysts form in the lamina propria. In infections induced by inoculation of infected blood, sporozoites appeared in blood cells 17-56 days post-inoculation, initially in any type of white blood cell but most commonly in macrophages and monocytes. Both erythroid and leucocytic cells were parasitised after five days. This haemococcidian is another component of the symbiotic complex found in Takydromus species of eastern and southeastern Asia.

Abstract. One of four Hoplobatrachus occipitalis (Günther, 1859) frogs received from Niger, West Africa was heavily infected with Lankesterella blood and pre-erythrocytic stages. Infected blood and tissues from this frog were force-fed to the remaining three frogs. Two survived to necropsy on days 14 and 27 post-feeding and were found to be infected with gamogonic and oogonic stages, respectively. The source of infection is inconclusive, as a natural origin cannot be excluded. Microgamont, macrogamont, oocyst and sporozoite structure and fine structure are described and found to conform in general, but not in detail, to previous descriptions. Gamonts and oocysts occurred predominantly in the liver and spleen. Walled sporulating oocysts were situated within macrophage centres. Oocysts yielded a progeny of 32 sporozoites. Pre-erythrocytic sporozoites developed within expanded inclusions, within their host cell, from which they massively invaded the liver and spleen, and to a lesser extent the lungs and kidneys. Sporozoites occurred in a parasitophorous vacuole in the erythrocytes. Conspecificity with Lankesterella dicroglossi Paperna et Ogara, 1996 reported from the same host species in Kenya remains uncertain due to several structural and developmental differences.

In 1978, the nature of the hypnozoite was discussed in an article that appeared in a relatively obscure journal, which is also where the term was adopted for Plasmodium (a little-known fact). As a result, that commentary on the use of the word "hypnozoite" has been almost completely overlooked. Although the publication is now more than three decades old, the analysis remains valid today. It is explained in the present paper that like "merozoite" and "sporozoite", the name "hypnozoite" is applicable not only to a latent stage in the life cycle of Plasmodium but to some apparently dormant forms of other kinds of apicomplexan parasites as well. Merozoites of different genera of parasitic protozoa are not necessarily the same biologically and/or otherwise. Similarly, although the hypnozoite concept relates primarily to pre-merozoite stages, some atypical post-divisional apicomplexan forms might also be hypnozoites. Examples are likewise given of latent organisms that, in contrast, are clearly not hypnozoites, such as dormant merozoites in malaria infections. Lastly, the plasmodial hypnozoite is placed in context in relation to the relatively unfamiliar (nomenclaturally) malarial bradysporozoite, chronozoite, dormozoite, merophore, merosome and x body. This paper is based on a presentation by the author, as a Life Member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, to its 59th Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, 3-7 November 2010.
