LiDAR integrated IR OWC system with the abilities of user localization and high-speed data transmission

Abstract: By using narrow infrared (IR) optical beams, optical wireless communication (OWC) system can realize ultra-high capacity and high-privacy data transmission. However, due to the point-to-point connection approach, a high accuracy localization system and beam-steering antenna (BSA) are required to steer the signal beam to user terminals. In this paper, we proposed an indoor beam-steering IR OWC system with high accuracy and calibration-free localization ability by employing a coaxial frequency modulated continuo… Show more

“…Nevertheless, precise tracking and steering techniques are essential to eliminate any misalignment between transceivers. A localization accuracy of 0.038 • and a wide field of view (FOV) of 70 • × 70 • have been experimentally demonstrated by utilizing light detection and ranging (LiDAR) [7,8]. Nonetheless, the integration of LiDAR with OWC introduces complexity and high costs.…”

“…In addition, the SOI platform not only offers excellent performance characteristics, but also enables low-cost, large-scale chip fabrication with CMOS manufacturing processes. Thus, SOI devices are widely used in numerous applications such as optical communications, quantum signal processing, three-dimensional imaging, and optical phase modulators [12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. The unique advantages conferred by SOI establish it as an advanced silicon photonic integration platform, thereby paving boundless pathways for the evolution of optoelectronics.…”

“…Furthermore, a highly accurate beam‐steering method based on frequency‐modulated continuous‐wave (FMCW) light detection a ranging (LIDAR) is proposed in ref. [24] to achieve a 17 Gbps IR‐OWC link. The large bandwidth of IR‐beam lasers makes it possible to utilise the well‐known TDMA technique to support more users which is simpler than non‐orthogonal multiple access and multi‐user multiple antenna schemes.…”
