Library Automation at The University for Development Studies: Challenges and Prospects

Abstract: The automation of a library that basically aims at improving the management of the library's resources and increasing access to these same resources by users has caught on so well in the western world that virtually all academic libraries in that part of the world have automated most of their services. In Africa, however, several challenges are making it difficult for academic libraries to do the same, thus depriving them of the numerous touted benefits a library stands to gain from automating its services. “…In a study by Kari and Baro (2014) on the use of LMS in Nigerian university libraries, it was reported that there was a high software turnover rate in most Nigerian university libraries for reasons such as lack of proper feasibility studies, huge maintenance cost and lack of technical support. Thompson and Pwadura (2014) also identified frequent power outages/surges, poor maintenance culture, lack of appropriate system security and inadequate finance as major problems affecting the use of LMS at the University of Development Studies in Ghana. In another study in Ghana by Ahenkorah-Marfo and Akussah (2016), it was revealed that the adoption of social media in top universities in Ghana was not streamlined, as the libraries did not have policies to guide them in the use of social media and they lacked the required skills to make the use of such tools effective.…”

“…A library automation software program automates book acquisition, cataloging, circulation, and locating reading materials (Nkhoma-Wamunza, 2003;Thompson & Pwadura, 2014). Automation helps libraries to organize, and disseminate knowledge efficiently (Nkhoma-Wamunza, 2003;Thompson & Pwadura, 2014). Suku and Pillai (2005) have cited several reasons for library automation.…”

“…ERs serve as gateways to information and knowledge providing support for teaching, learning and research . Technology in sub-Saharan African universities has evolved at a slow pace which is attributed among other factors to budgetary constraints, high cost of ICT facilities, inadequate ICT skills, unstable power supply, and lack of ICT strategies and policies (Thompson & Pwadura, 2014).…”

“…Generally, the findings revealed that both public and private case institutions were challenged with inadequate human and non-human resources. Resource-related constraints generally appear to be a major issue in developing countries where academic institutions are challenged with budgetary constraints, high cost of ICT facilities, inadequate ICT skills and unstable power supply (Ani et al, 2016;Deans & Durrant, 2016;Dukic & Striskovic, 2015;Ukachi, 2015;Thompson & Pwadura, 2014).…”
