Abstract: This article explores Latin American genomic studies of mestizaje and the way mestizaje's inherent contradiction between equality and hierarchy-a contradiction typical of liberalism-is managed in genomics. In Latin America, ideologies and practices of mestizaje may be seen as an antidote to hierarchies of race and class, but also as a terrain for the enactment of these hierarchies. Mestizaje mediates this contradiction between equality and hierarchy first by deploying the idea of sexual intimacy and family kin… Show more

“…It is worth noting that in some cases, genetic research targeting minority groups is carried out by geneticists who self-identify as members of these groups for whom they seek social justice, political and medical attention (Fullwiley 2008, Bliss 2015. However, while genetic research on minority groups can have empowering effects, the case of the Roma is just one of many cases in which it has no such effect, but does have the potential to feed into socially divisive processes (Egorova 2015;Kent et al 2015;Santos, Da Silva and Gibbon 2014;Wade et al 2017).…”

Policies in these directions may intend to promote equality of opportunity, exchange across social boundaries, tolerance and "diversity" but at the same time may introduce contradictions which may facilitate discrimination or segregation by class, race, and gender (Wade, 2017). The very debate on culturalism and multiculturalism transects political identities across left and right.…”

“…En este contexto emergieron los discursos de la "raza cósmica" de José de Vasconcelos en México (Miller 2004) y de la "democracia racial" en Brasil con los trabajos de Gilberto Freyre (Freyre [1933] 1986). Con la ideología del mestizaje se buscaba la eliminación de todo rastro de negritud o "indianidad" para preservar el orden racial de la supremacía blanco-mestiza en donde la blancura se consolidaba como un objetivo socialmente deseable (Wade 2004;Wade 2017).…”
